Eosinophilic Gut Conditions
Eosinophilic Oesophagitis and others
How our dietitians can help you
- Personalised support: We work with you and your gastroenterologist to decide which dietary approach is most suitable for you, and how this will be monitored.
- Meeting your needs: We support you to maintain nutritional adequacy, diet diversity, food enjoyment and variety during an exclusion diet trial, through food challenges and as you reintroduce foods during dietary liberalisation.
- Your choice: An exclusion diet is not suitable for everyone for dietary management of EoE or another eosinophilic conditions. We talk through options and support your choice.
- Maintain or regain food enjoyment: Our dietary management approaches accommodate fear of food or eating that understandably results from associated symptoms over time.
- Expert guidance with empathy: Drs Kerith Duncanson and Georgina Williams bring deep research experience and a compassionate, individualised approach to every client.
More about Eosinophilic Oesophagitis (EOE)
What is EOE?
Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic immune condition. Certain foods can trigger inflammation in the oesophagus, leading to symptoms like difficulty swallowing, chest pain, and food getting stuck.
Dietary management is a key treatment strategy and involves removing specific foods that cause this reaction. While elemental or exclusion diets have been most studied, they can be hard to follow. Removing only the most likely food allergens (usually wheat and/or milk) depending on your symptoms and history can lead to significant symptom relief and healing of the esophagus.
Other approaches such as limiting natural food chemical are also suitable and effective for some people. Allergy testing-based diets are less reliable because EoE is not typically driven by traditional IgE allergies. Nutritional monitoring is a priority during dietary therapy to avoid deficiencies, and food reintroduction is done gradually to identify specific triggers. Working with your Help Yourself dietitian will help ensure the diet is safe, effective, tailored to your needs and be as enjoyable as possible.
